If you're looking for a place in Central Florida to get away from it all and experience a taste of Old Florida living then you owe it to yourself to spend a few days camping at Hontoon Island State Park.
Our three day adventure started with a short ferry trip over to the 1,650 acre island. The helpful and friendly Park Rangers supplied a van for transporting all of our gear back to the cabins, which was very helpful.
The cabins are located about a quarter of a mile away from the main marina and store. Far enough away to offer plenty of quiet and solitude but close enough for a walk to the store for any items that may have been overlooked while packing. Each cabin features a screened front porch, pair of ceiling fans, interior and exterior light and a minimum of four bunk beds. Guests are responsible for providing their own linens, pillows, etc.
The small number of cabins, tent sites, ample spacing and remote location make for one of the quietest and most relaxing parks with amenities I've had the pleasure of experiencing.
The island is low lying and prone to occasional flooding, so the best times to visit would be in the drier/cooler months. While the cabins are raised, I would recommend calling ahead to inquire about the condition of the grounds before tent camping.
