Part of the Ocala National Forest, Alexander Springs Recreation Area has always been a favorite place of mine to do some snorkeling in very clear water and take a look at what is going on under the surface. The main spring boil and surrounding vegetation is fairly undisturbed, allowing a large number of largemouth bass, redear sunfish, bluegill, bowfin, gar, turtles and other Florida freshwater wildlife to congregate. I even had the pleasure of seeing an alligator up close and personal while taking a tour around the spring's perimeter.
The park has a short but well maintained hiking trail that follows part of the spring run before turning and making loop around some beautiful hammock habitat. It had rained the day before I had visited so there were a few wet and muddy areas on the trail, but they were easy to step around if not wearing waterproof boots. Walking the trail is a great way to dry off and warm up after a swim in the 72 degree spring water.
Alexander Springs Recreation Area also features a kayak/canoe launch, and canoe rentals are available at the store. I'm looking forward to returning one day soon to try out the campground and canoe the clear waters of the Alexander Spring Run.
