With the growing proliferation of large retail outlets selling fishing tackle and related gear, one thing that is in danger of falling on the Florida Endangered Species list is the good ‘ole local hometown tackle shop. While a trip to the local department store often carries many fishing supplies, one thing it is always short of is inspiration.

Following the Path

I look to the left, no trail marker. Look to the right, nothing but pine trees and the occasional scrub palmetto. I’m now officially lost in Rock Springs Run Preserve, and with a wildfire heading my direction and burning close enough to hear the popping of burning branches and the accelerated breeze caused by the roaring fire, I’m in a precarious position to say the least.

The 15 Minute Fishing Break

I walk along the seawall, rod and reel by my side. Images of a hurried lunch still fresh in my mind. The cool, crisp January air surrounds me in invigorating fashion as I gaze into the water. Closer to the water's edge I creep. The familiar, striped profile of a sheepshead scurries away as my shadow looms over the submerged rocks.

Back to Basics

Yesterday afternoon I decided to take a short break after work and do a little fishing. The only problem, where to go, and for what? I had recently sold my boat, and for the last few years I was doing most of my fishing in various locations by boat. After a few minutes of thought, running through the bank of locations I have stored away in my mind, it finally occurred to me that I just need to get back to the basics, and that I did.
